For many years steam trains have provided fascination to people because of their old-fashioned appearance and nostalgia for a former era. In south Devon, they wish to celebrate this rich heritage through the fantastic railway which runs along the coast.
Paignton is easily visited from London by getting a train from Waterloo. This accessibility has led to many people travelling from the capital to escape the hustle and bustle for the old-fashioned picturesque world of Devon and its steam railway.
The fresh sea air combined with the beautiful sights makes this a perfect place to visit.

Paignton is on the English Riviera, hidden between Tor Bay and Brixham on the beautiful south Devon coast. It combines the modern with the nostalgic, with its excellent Victorian pier. The town offers some amazing flora on land, such as the tropical palm trees, as well as coral in the sea. For many years, tourists have gone snorkelling to admire Paignton’s underwater life.
Paignton has plenty of life outside of the water, and we’re not just talking about the fantastic shops, pubs and restaurants. Paignton Zoo is one of the most renowned zoos in the South West. It contains a wide variety of animals and regularly attracts people from all over the country.
Steam railways are a fantastic feature of our British history. Even now they are regarded with a certain awe, a bygone relic of the olden days, as well as a key feature in modern classics such as the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter series.
The steam train can be boarded from Goodrington or Paignton and runs for seven miles along the south Devon coast. Its slow speed allows you to take in some of the breathtaking beauty of the area – beaches, fields, towns and sea stretching to the horizon. It takes you through the wooded slopes bordering the Dart estuary.
